    Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what causes frame dropping. I am trying to edit video on my pc but every time i try my frame drop rate is close to 50%.
I am using a Guillemot cougar card and I have a p3 450mhz and I have tried capture in both Ulead media studio and Premiere with the same effect.

    Help?

    Thanks

One big factor can be disk write-caching being performed by the OS and less than 32MB RAM. And IDE bus mastering not being enabled.

Presumably you have at least 64MB RAM.

Disk caching will only need to be switched off if you are using Win9x

Another thing, try capturing to a newly formatted drive, or do a full defrag of it (the capture drive) before trying again.

You do have a separate drive for capturing, don't you?

yeah, all the above. When you capture video the video is saved straight to the hard drive as the capture progresses.
This means that each frame is written to the hard drive in real time. So if you video card is too slow, or your Hard disk is messy, or your computer is running other programs (such as virus checking or network software or even word!) then the computer is just running too many processes to keep up with the real time video.
You can try reducing the image quality, play with the compression, switch off all unwanted programs....streamline your computer so that *all* it is doing is capturing the video.

Another problem might be that either your DMA is turned off or your hard drive isn't fast enough. I know for good capture you have to have a 7200 rpm hrad drive iif it is slower you may not get a good capture. If you are using scsi then don't worry about it.

    Good luck

Make sure DMA is turned on and there are no other programs running (Alt-Ctrl-Del).Is this an Analog or Firewire capture card.If it is an Analog card your hold system may not be powerful enough. On the otherhand if it it Digital(firewire) you won't need as much power but it most be set up right. Always use a separate Drive for capture without the Operating System on it.
